Campuses of five large Moscow universities will be placed on the territories recently added to the city limits. The relocation is planned to take place by 2020. This decision was made by the interdepartmental workgroup at the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
Plekhanov Russian University of Economics will occupy 20 ha of space on the added territories, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI — 10 ha, Moscow State Institute of Radio-engineering, Electronics and Automation (MIREA) — 5 ha, Moscow State Industrial University — 2 ha. Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys will also move to the new territories.
New campuses will have study and residential buildings, as well as laboratories, libraries and apartments for teachers.
The projects of new campuses are expected to be finalized by 2013, while the construction will begin in the autumn of 2014.
“It will not be a simple relocation, but rather an expansion — construction of additional spaces", said Alexander Sigov, rector of MIREA, to Izvestya.
Yaroslav Kuzminov, rector of Higher School of Economics, also puts high hopes in relocation. He said, it would improve the quality of education. “Our students spend 3 hours each day in commute from residences to the university and back. By the time they finish their studies they would have on average a full year of commuting”, said the rector.
The relocation of Moscow universities is expected to alleviate difficult traffic and public transportation situation in the city.
Moreover, the ministry is working on the criteria of efficiency of Russian higher education institutions. The institutions that will be considered ineffective are to be either reorganized or closed down.
